The future of the Middle-East peace process, the stability of the region and the safety of ordinary people in the Gaza Strip have been seriously jeopardized by the “irresponsibility of Hamas rocket attacks” and the “excessiveness of Israel’s response,” a senior United Nations envoy warned today, as diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict intensify.

 

On the seventh day of Israeli bombing raids on Gaza and with more than 400 Gazans reportedly killed and thousands wounded, Robert Serry, UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, called for the international community to step up its attempts to end the growing humanitarian crisis.

Starbucks, once the undisputed leader in premium-price caffeine fixes, has long cultivated a corporate image for social responsibility, environmental awareness, and sensitivity to workers' rights. Now that carefully crafted reputation is under assault, thanks to a messy legal dispute with a group called the Starbucks Workers Union (SWU) (part of the Industrial Workers of the World, or IWW), which started recruiting employees in 2004 and now claims 300 members.

 

The National Labor Relations Board found on Dec. 23 that Starbucks had illegally fired three New York City baristas as it tried to squelch the union organizing effort. The 88-page ruling also says the company broke the law by giving negative job evaluations to other union supporters and prohibiting employees from discussing union issues at work. The judge ordered that the three baristas be reinstated and receive back wages. The judge also called on Starbucks to end discriminatory treatment of other pro-union workers at four Manhattan locations named in the case. The decision marks the end of an 18-month trial in New York City that pitted the ubiquitous multinational corporation against a group of twenty something baristas who are part of the Industrial Workers of the World.

With more than 500,000 cuts in November and December, the U.S. lost 2.6 million jobs in 2008, led by layoffs in manufacturing, construction and retail. It was the highest figure since 1945. With the battle in Gaza well into its third week, Israeli troops deepened their incursion into the Palestinian territory, entering the suburbs of densely populated Gaza City and engaging in street fighting with Palestinian militants. The offensive, which has claimed the lives of more than 950 Palestinians and 13 Israelis so far, has hardened attitudes on both sides: numerous civilian deaths have led to an outpouring of support for Hamas among Palestinians in the Fatah-controlled West Bank, while Israelis have united behind their military's efforts.

The Somali pirates who had held a Saudi oil tanker captive for nearly two months released the ship after receiving a reported $3 million ransom on Jan. 9. The tanker, the Sirius Star, is the largest ship ever hijacked and had been held since Nov. 15. It was carrying about $100 million worth of crude oil.

Adolf Merckle, a 74-year-old billionaire whose business empire included some of Germany's best-known cement and pharmaceutical companies, threw himself in front of a train on Jan. 5--driven to suicide, his family said, by the global financial crisis. Merckle had lost hundreds of millions of euros in a bad bet on Volkswagen shares, endangering the future of his companies as a result. Sales of cars and light trucks in the final month of 2008 fell 36% from the previous December, capping a disastrous year in which U.S. auto sales tumbled 18%.
