此句不能譯作：“這個小女孩對我很親熱�！比缫磉_此涵義，應該說:The little girl is affectionate towards me.
在英語中，有些形容詞能表示被動的涵義，上例中dear就是其中一例，他相當于beloved或lovable，因此不能把它譯為“對……親熱”。如要表示主動的意味，應該用affectionate，因為它表示showing love to的意思。請看類似例子：
He is a man dear to all.
所有人都喜歡他。
What a dear little child.
多么惹人喜愛的孩子�。�
Freedom is dearer to him than life.
對他來說，自由比生命更寶貴。
My mother is dear to me.
我愛我的母親。
Oh, if only she knew how dear she is to our hearts!
啊，但愿她知道我們是多么愛她！
Dear也可以用作名詞，例如:You are a dear. (你是個可愛的人)。作名詞時，dear依舊表示被動的意味。
另外，名詞stranger和形容詞strange的用法與dear頗為相似。例如：He is a stranger to me.此句應譯為：“我不認識他”，而不能譯為“他不認識我”。His handwriting is strange to me.是“我不認識他的筆跡”，不是：“他的筆跡不認得我。”
下面再請看一些表示被動涵義的形容詞：
They are all contemptible fellows.
(deserving to be despised)
It is said this dictionary is not get-at-able in Macau.
(that can be obtained)
The book is informative and highly readable.
(capable of being read with pleasure)
Your words are understandable.
(that can be understood)
Mary’s words are noteworthy.
(deserving to be noted)
His conduct is praiseworthy.
(deserving to be praised)
It’s something unwished-for.
(undesired or not wished)
His address is unknown to me.
(that is not known)
所以此句應翻譯為：我喜歡這個女孩。
