此句不能翻譯成：“我要向他報仇。”如果要表達此意，應該翻譯為：
I will avenge myself on him.
或：I will be revenged on him.
avenge和revenge都表示“報仇”的涵義，但內涵有所不同。avenge是“替別人報仇”，報仇的動機往往不是出于私憤，而是出于正義。Collins Cobuild字典中給出avenge的定義為：If you avenge a wrong or harmful act, you hurt or punish the person who is responsible for it.
而revenge一詞定義為：If you revenge yourself on someone who has hurt you, you hurt them in return. 通常是指“為自己報仇，報復或雪恨”，它是retaliate的同義詞。
avenge和revenge這兩個詞的用法既然如此特殊，我們在使用時必須注意。下面請看例句：
I will avenge my comrades in arms on the enemy.
我要為我的戰友們向敵人報仇。
We will avenge our parents.
我們要為我們的父母親復仇。
Hamlet avenged his father’s wrongs.
哈姆雷特替他父親報了仇。
請注意，我們決不可說：We will avenge the enemy. (意為我們要為敵人報仇，意義完全相反了。)向敵人報仇的正確說法是：to avenge (revenge) oneself on the enemy
revenge也可以用作名詞，例如：
He likes to have his revenge.
他這個人喜歡給人穿小鞋。（即報復心很重）
He is thirsting for revenge.
他急于報復。
So in idiomatic English, one does not say:” I shall avenge/revenge the person that does the wrong. Rather, we should say:
We avenge/revenge our parents.
We avenge/revenge our parents’ deaths upon the enemies.
We avenge/revenge ourselves on our enemies.
所以此句翻譯為：我要為他報仇。
