mess是一團亂嗎？細心一點的讀者一定會發現，解釋為“一團亂”似乎說不通，在上下文中沒有依據，而翻譯翻字典你就會發現，mess還有別的意思，這里它是指：a building or room in which members of the armed forces have their meals, 也就是（軍隊）食堂的意思。
這句話描寫的是小說的主人公Tristran和Yvaine來到一艘航行在空中的船上時發生的事情，mess在這里指的是這艘船上的食堂。
