Fat在生活當中比較常見，不論是作為名詞還是形容詞，但是其實被我們使用的意思比較單一，所以通過今天的探索，大家可能會發現”fat” is far more interesting. 讓我們先來看看還是新概念課本當中fat的用法吧！
新三 Lesson23 One man’s meat is another man’s poison 當中：On the other hand, your stomach would turn at the idea of frying potatoes in animal fat-- the normally accepted practice in many northern countries.
這里面的fat意思相當于oil，就是說有人會對用動物油燒土豆吃這種做飯感到不習慣。
新三課本當中還有一處用到fat, 是在Lesson26 Wanted: a large biscuit tin 當中：It had been baked by a college student who had used over 1000 pounds of flour, 800 pounds of sugar, 200 pounds of fat, and 400 pounds of various other ingredients.
這里的fat當然也是脂肪，油的意思。
而新二課本當中，只有一處用到fat這個詞。
Lesson 51 Reward for virtue My friend, Hugh, has always been fat, but things got so bad recently that he decided to go on a diet.
這里的fat就是我們最長的形容詞意思了——胖！哈哈！
我們再來看看這個句子：China's building material industry expects fat profit in Q1.
如果說fat profit“豐厚利潤”的這種形象生動表達你還覺得沒什么新鮮的話，那我們來看看下面這句話吧！
Liverpool grew fat on the basis of the slave trade. 利物浦是靠奴隸貿易富(肥)起來的。
神馬？你還是覺得形象生動不能滿足你？！那看下面這個吧！
It ain't over til' the fat lady sings. （不到最后胖女人出場，戲還沒完。）其實也就是說不到最后，結果無從知曉，可能好戲在后頭。
其實我們完全會想到當初紅極一時的蘇珊大媽啊！
而fat cat，指的是有錢大佬，特別是那些假公濟私、拿公家肥自家的人。
最后我們再來看一個例子：
A: Perhaps they'll invite you.
B: Yeah! Fat chance of that.
這里的fat chance估計就是highly possible的意思吧？！哈哈！錯了！恰恰相反，這里的fat chance其實是說no way. 估計就像中文里面的自嘲吧！
類似的相反意思用法再看下面兩個句子吧：
A fat lot of use you are ！(你一點用也沒有！)
He knows how much trouble it causes, but a fat lot he cares. (他知道這會引起很大麻煩，但他一點也不在乎。)
