昂立外語【新概念培訓】分享gentle這個詞。最近有一部很火的高智商電影Interstellar《星際穿越》不知同學們有沒有去電影院觀看呢？~
看完這部片子除了對宇宙產生了深深的敬畏外，令老師印象最深的就是反復被念及的一首詩——Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night《不要溫和地走進那個良夜》 此詩是英國著名詩人Dylan Thomas的代表作。作于詩人的父親逝世前的病危期間，整首詩充斥著對“暮年”表現出的大無畏精神。下面請首先來欣賞下這首詩：
Do not go gentle into that good night,
不要溫和地走進那個良夜，
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
老年應當在日暮時燃燒咆哮；
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
怒斥，怒斥光明的消逝。
Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
雖然智慧的人臨終時懂得黑暗有理，
Because their words had forked no lightning they
因為他們的話沒有迸發出閃電，他們
Do not go gentle into that good night.
也并不溫和地走進那個良夜。
Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
善良的人，當最后一浪過去，高呼他們脆弱的善行
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
可能曾會多么光輝地在綠色的海灣里舞蹈，
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
怒斥，怒斥光明的消逝。
Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
狂暴的人抓住并歌唱過翱翔的太陽，
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,

也并不溫和地走進那個良夜。
Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
嚴肅的人，接近死亡，用炫目的視覺看出
在此詩里，gentle這個詞反復出現，意為“溫和的”。此詩的gentle和我們平時所說的“溫柔”不同，有點貶義的意味，雖然“溫和”但也意味著無所作為，黯然地接受命運。

gentle最常見的一個衍生詞就是gentleman，意為“紳士”

形容人：Someone who is gentle is kind, mild, and calm. 溫和的

最后讓我們回到Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night這首詩。整首詩旨在激勵無論是即將老去、生命即將終止的老人，還是終將老去的年輕人，都要"burn and rave at close of day "，只要如此，""Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay "。也正因此片中的老教授才用此詩給在浩瀚宇宙的絕望而孤獨角落奮斗的科學家們，給予信念。生命的意義并不在于其“長度”，而在于其“寬度”，愿親愛的學生們也能從中有所領悟！
