昂立外語【新概念培訓】分享privilege這個詞。privilege一詞可以做動詞，可以做名詞。名詞的中文解釋是特權，英文釋義為a special right or advantage that a particular person or group of people has。也就是只有一部分人才能有的權利叫做privilege。作為動詞，基本延續了名詞的含義，中文解釋為給予……特權，即to give somebody/something special rights or advantages that others do not have。
privilege這一詞在新三的課文中也不止一次出現，如 Lesson 4 The double life of Alfred Bloggs中：
Such is human nature, that a great many people are often willing to sacrifice higher pay for the privilege of becoming white collar workers.
又如Lesson41 Illusions of Pastoral peace中：
Why people are prepared to tolerate a four hour journey each day for the dubious privilege of living in the country is beyond me.
可見，在新三的課文中privilege的用法均為privilege of doing sth. 也即做某事的特權。
privilege有的時候也可以和honor 一詞替換，近似于榮幸，如：
It must be a privilege to know such a man.
認識這樣的人肯定很榮幸。
因為privilege表示只有少數人才有的權力，所以很多時候會作為貶義詞來使用，特指富人或者上層社會才有的特殊權利和優惠。比如：
Having been born to privilege in old Hollywood, she was carrying on a family tradition by acting.
她出身于過去好萊塢的名門，繼承了當演員的家族傳統。
The Great Gatsby 剛開頭就有一句話說：
I wanted no more riotous excursions with privileged glimpses into the human heart.
我不再要參與放浪形骸的游樂，也不再要偶爾窺見人內心深處的榮幸了。
這里的privilege是過去分詞作定語，修飾glimpses（瞥見;一瞥）。為什么說窺見人的內心是一種privilege呢，其實這句話之前一大段都在說我特別受那些奇怪的人的信任，所以很多人都會向我傾訴秘密。這句話實則又是和開頭“我”父親說的那句話“Whenever you feel like criticizing any one, just remember that all the people in this world haven’t had the advantages that you’ve had.” 是相互輝映的。并不是所有人都有窺探人的內心的權力，從這個意義上說是privilege。而且對于有些人來說，這樣的一種“技能”或許也是一種榮幸。僅用privilege這一詞就傳達出了這種含義。
而當時的“我”不再想要這個privilege，說明我真的是受夠了人的道德缺失，使得之后出現的唯一的例外——蓋茨比——變得更加珍貴而特別。
特權聽上去很高洋上，其實我們每個人多少都會有一些privilege的，比如the privilege of learning English， the privilege of becoming a better person. 正如下面這本書的標題。
