昂立外語(yǔ)【新概念培訓(xùn)】分享sacred這一詞。這個(gè)詞的意思是神圣的。乍一看這個(gè)名詞可能就會(huì)覺(jué)得這個(gè)詞肯定用在和教堂等等有關(guān)的地方，但其實(shí)這個(gè)詞可以用的范圍很廣。
sacred在新三課文里面首次出現(xiàn)是在Lesson 3 An unknown goddess：
In the most sacred room of the temple, clay fragments of fifteen statues were found.
這里的神圣的，即指宗教上的神圣，不是任何人都能接近的地方。
sacred第二次出現(xiàn)在Lesson 45 The Power of the Press：
Acting on the contention that facts are sacred, reporters can cause untold suffering to individuals by publishing details about their private lives.
前半句話可以翻譯成“按照事實(shí)至上的觀點(diǎn)”，這里的sacred和宗教基本沒(méi)有關(guān)系，就約等于very important。
所以，我們從新概念三冊(cè)中了解到sacred主要有這樣兩個(gè)含義：
1. connected with God or a god; considered to be holy
e.g. Cows are sacred to Hindus.
牛對(duì)于印度教的人來(lái)說(shuō)是神圣的，是不能作為食物的，它們是神的化身。
2. very important and treated with great respect
e.g. For journalists nothing is sacred (= they write about anything).
對(duì)于記者來(lái)說(shuō)，沒(méi)有什么是不能寫(xiě)的。這里的sacred和宗教沒(méi)有關(guān)系，可以理解為就像宗教一樣不可隨便接近的。
就后面那個(gè)意義來(lái)說(shuō)，已經(jīng)去掉了宗教的意義，所以日常生活中都是可以用到的。
比如The Great Gatsby 中接近結(jié)尾的時(shí)候有這樣一段：
He put his hands in his coat pockets and turned back eagerly to his scrutiny of the house, as though my presence marred the sacredness of the vigil. So I walked away and left him standing there in the moonlight—watching over nothing.
他把兩手插在上衣口袋里，熱切地掉轉(zhuǎn)身去端詳那座房子，仿佛我的在場(chǎng)有損于他神圣的守望。于是我走開(kāi)了，留下他站在月光里--空守著。
這里sacredness是sacred的名詞形式，意思不變。什么叫做the sacredness of the vigil呢？vigil意為守夜，整夜地監(jiān)視。整個(gè)短語(yǔ)翻譯為神圣的守望。在小說(shuō)的這一段，蓋茨比和黛西乘坐的車(chē)撞死了人，黛西受到了驚嚇。于是蓋茨比一直不放心黛西，簡(jiǎn)直要遠(yuǎn)遠(yuǎn)地守望著黛西所在的房子。這是怎樣的一種愛(ài)，是純潔到幾乎不忍沾染的。所以，“我”才會(huì)覺(jué)得自己最好不要呆在那里，自己的在場(chǎng)是不應(yīng)該的，就好像一個(gè)不信教的人不敢隨便踏入教堂一樣。
我們從以上的例子中知道了，sacred這一詞其實(shí)并沒(méi)有那么sacred。在自己的作文中不妨也試著用用看哦~
