昂立外語【新概念培訓】跟大家分享“sink”。sink表示to descend to the bottom,中文譯為“下沉”,在新三中用的可謂多頻且精彩。譬如第十課中對于Titanic的描述中,甚至還用到了它的兩個變身形式:sinking以及unsinkable。
說 到這里不得不提Downton Abbey里的Lord 對于Tatanic這一世紀劇喪的話:Every mountain is un-climb-able until someone climbs it so every ship is unsinkable until it sinks.
讀來意味深長,值得玩味。
回到我們的Pride and Prejudice中,看到這樣一段文字:
She remembered also, that till the Netherfield family had quitted the country, he had
told his story to no one but herself; but that after their removal, it had been every
where discussed; that he had then no reserves, no scruples in sinking Mr. Darcy's
character, though he had assured her that respect for the father would always prevent
his exposing the son.
回到語境,整篇都在告訴我們女一號Elizabeth的后悔,她受到另一個朋友的影響,對Darcy先生產生了prejudice,直到后者給她寫了很長一 封情意綿綿的信,她才恍然大悟,開始反思過去的點滴,其中就有對于這位朋友過往言論的回憶,于是她回憶起來說這位朋友曾毫無保留(have no reserves),毫無顧忌(no scruples)對Darcy的品格做出了sink這樣的動作。
翻閱詞典發現,sink還可以表示:To debase the nature of/ to degrade (The American Heritage® Dictionary of the
English Language, the 4th Edition),譯為中文即:“詆毀”。
于是上面一段文字不言而喻,Elizabeth聽信了這位先生對于Darcy的不公允的甚至是污蔑性的描述,才會影響了自己的判斷。
