compete是不及物動詞，與不同的介詞搭配體現不同的意義，常見的有：
compete against表示“與…對抗”；
compete for表示“奪取…”；
compete with表示“對…抗爭”
He's hoping to compete in the London marathon.
他期盼著參加倫敦馬拉松比賽。
Jim competed against the world's best runner in the Games.
在運動會上吉姆與世界最佳賽跑運動員競爭。
Several companies are competing for the contract.
幾家公司正為爭取一項合同而互相競爭。
We can compete with the best teams.
我們能與最好的隊競爭。
此外，compete with還有“匹敵，比得上，媲美”之意，多用于否定句：
e.g. Hugh’s house can’t compete with yours. 休的房子比不上你的。
None of his later books can compete with his first one. 他后來的書沒有一本能比得上第一本。
