You still have a long way to go.”
I think that you, Miss Austen, consider yourself a cut above the company.”
2 Lesson 64 The Channel Tunnel
The tunnel would be well-ventilated if tall chimneys were built above sea level.
這是above的基本含義“at or to a higher place or position than sth/sb”的使用,介詞,此處意為“在海平面之上”。
新3 Lesson 34 happy discovery
A truly dedicated searcher for art treasures must have patience, and above all, the ability
to recognize the worth of something when he sees it.
這是above另一基本含義“of greater importance or of higher quality than sb/sth”的常見詞組above all,意為“最重要的事,尤其是”。
I rate her above most other players of her age.
Above的第三個基本含義為“more than sth; greater in number, level or age than sb/st”(數(shù)量,水平,年齡等超過),例如:
Temperature has been above average.
Above
She is not above lying when it suits her.
But you are above being pleased.
在這里,above意為“too good or too honest or too proud to do sth”(不屑于,不至于做某事)。
A long scream sounded from somewhere above.
Banks have been charging 25 percent and above for unsecured loans.
Several conclusions could be drawn from the results described above.
For a copy of their brochure, write to the above address.
There is a picture above/over the fireplace.
Can you see the helicopter above/over the palace?
He put his handkerchief over his face.
She spread a cloth over the table.
If we can’t go over the mountain, we must go round it.
(4)above與over都有“more than”的意思,然而above is used in relation to a minimum level or a fixed point (above與最低限度或某固定點關聯(lián)),例如:Temperature will not rise above zero tonight. 而over is used with numbers, ages, money and time,例如: He is over 50. We waited over 2 hours.
