昂立外語【新概念培訓】分享drill這個小詞。在我們新概念三Lesson 40 Who’s who的課文中出現了這個生詞：
When a student recently saw two workmen using a pneumatic drill outside his university, he immediately telephoned the police and informed them that two students dressed up as workmen were tearing up the road with a pneumatic drill.
這篇課文講述了大學生喜歡惡作劇，有個學生看見兩個工人在大學校門外用風鉆干活，馬上打電話報告警察，說有兩個學生扮成工人，正在用風鉆破壞路面。課文中的drill顯然是一個名詞，表示a tool or machine with a pointed end for making holes“鉆孔機”。drill其實在我們新概念二的課文中也出現過哦，小朋友還記得嗎，Lesson 88 Trapped in a mine 中有這樣一句話Rescue workers are therefore drilling a hole on the north side of the mine.這里的drill是作為動詞“鉆孔”解釋。那除此之外，drill還有什么其他含義嗎，讓我們來看一下下面這段話：
So now when my mother presented her tests, I performed listlessly, my head propped on one arm. I pretended to be bored. And I was. I got so bored that I started counting the bellows of the foghorns out on the bay while my mother drilled me in other areas. At last she was beginning to give up hope.
該段話選自于著名的美籍華裔作家Amy Tan（譚恩美）的引起轟動的處女作《喜福會》（The Joy Luck Club）中的一則故事Two kinds，作者通過講述一些家庭小事反映出要強的母親那“望女成鳳”的急切心態。而“我”已對此感到厭倦，想要擺脫束縛做回自己，因此當我母親訓練我其他方面的能力時，我煩到開始數屋外海灣上的霧角聲。這段話中的drill顯而易見是一個動詞，表示“訓練”，尤其是指通過反復操練，to teach students, sports players etc by making them repeat the same lesson, exercise etc many times。比如說，對學生進行英語語法訓練，我們就可以說to drill students in English grammar~
