Certain一般情況下作形容詞，但是如上例子，意思完全不一樣。
1. 某些，某幾個
A certain man will visit you tomorrow. 明天某人將探訪你。
A certain Mr Brown telephoned while you were out。 你出去的時候，一個叫布朗先生的人打電話來了。
To a certain extent, I'm in favor of your project. 從某種程度上說,我贊成你的方案。
注：certain不一定只跟單數。如：
Certain of those present had had too much to drink. 有些出席的人喝得太多了。
Certain things are not openly spoken about. 有些事是不能公開說的。
2. 確定的
One thing is certain - she won't give up the money willingly. 有一點是肯定的——她不會心甘情愿地放棄這一筆錢。
I can't say for certain how long I'll be there. 我說不準我在那兒會呆多久。
I don't know for certain if she's coming. 我不能肯定她是否會來。
近義詞辨析：
certain, some
Some和certain都表示“某個”時，some后面跟可數名詞單數，不加冠詞，表“某個”強調不知道、不了解，而certain則是說話人了解不便說而已，后面可以加復數。
如 A certain boy/Two certain boys called you. 一/兩個男孩給你打過電話了。
Some girl knocked at your door while you were out. 你外出的時候，有個女孩敲過門。
