今天我們來講sheer這個詞。這一詞在新概念三冊Lesson 47 Too high a price?中首次出現(xiàn)：
We keep trying all four methods, but the sheer volume of rubbish we produce worldwide threatens to overwhelm us.
這里的sheer volume指的是凈含量，sheer單獨拿出來意思是純粹的，不參雜的。
形容詞的sheer除了這個解釋之外，牛津詞典中還有如下解釋：
1. very steep eg. sheer cliffs/slopes
2. (of cloth, etc.) thin, light and almost transparent
e.g. sheer nylon
在The Great Gatsby中有這樣一段：
He took out a pile of shirts and began throwing them, one by one, before us, shirts of sheer linen and thick silk and fine flannel, which lost their folds as they fell and covered the table in many-colored disarray.
這段話中的sheer應該用第2種解釋，翻譯過來是：他拿出一堆襯衫，開始一件一件扔在我們面前，薄麻布襯衫、厚綢襯衫、細法蘭絨襯衫都抖散了，五顏六色擺滿了一桌。
sheer形容材質的輕薄。
sheer還可以做副詞，意思為：straight up or down。如：
The cliffs rise sheer from the beach.
