appetite (名詞)

[義]對(duì)…渴望，對(duì)…喜愛(ài)

[例句]The public have a great appetite for scandal.

翻譯：公眾對(duì)流言蜚語(yǔ)總有無(wú)窮的興趣。

［解讀］appetite本意是對(duì)于“食物的欲望”，即“食欲”，說(shuō)一個(gè)人“胃口好”可以叫“a healthy appetite”。“appetizer”可以表示一頓飯前的“開(kāi)胃小吃”。

引申出去，appetite也未必是和食物搭配，可以表示對(duì)于其他事物的興趣，例如“求知欲”可以叫“an appetite for knowledge”；“權(quán)力欲”叫“an appetite for power”。從這些例子中，大家可以看到appetite一詞后通常加for：an appetite for sth。

在Andrew Marr所寫(xiě)A History of the World 一書(shū)第二章“The Case for War”中，作者說(shuō)戰(zhàn)爭(zhēng)所及之處，生靈涂炭，遍地焦土，但同時(shí)戰(zhàn)爭(zhēng)也給很多新事物提供發(fā)芽的種子：

At a time of social change and civil warfare, the appetite for new thinking is famously keen.

在充滿社會(huì)變化和國(guó)內(nèi)戰(zhàn)爭(zhēng)的時(shí)期，人們對(duì)新思想的渴望是非常強(qiáng)烈的。

翻譯：她在新電影中獲得主演角色。

［解讀］land本意是“土地”，作動(dòng)詞可以表示“上岸，登岸”，或“（飛機(jī)）降落”。

今天給大家分享的，是land作動(dòng)詞另一層意思：to succeed in getting something that was difficult to get，通常是經(jīng)過(guò)激烈競(jìng)爭(zhēng)（fierce competition）后得到的。例如在律師事務(wù)所謀得一職可以說(shuō)“to land a position in a law firm”，暗示名額有限，可能經(jīng)過(guò)多輪面試后獲得。

在Andrew Marr所寫(xiě)A History of the World一書(shū)中，作者提到孔子（Confucius）周游列國(guó)傳播自己政治理想的經(jīng)歷，有這樣一句：

He (Confucius) tramped the lanes and roads of ancient China, gathering followers who repeated his stories and arguments, and picking up odd pieces of work but never landing another court position.

孔子在各國(guó)奔走，聚集了一眾轉(zhuǎn)述自己事跡和想法的弟子，將一些零散作品編輯成冊(cè)，但終其一生也沒(méi)能在朝廷謀得一職。
