在備考托福過程中，一提到詞匯量，同學們往往都會尤其關注閱讀詞匯(reading vocabulary), 常常無意識地弱化了對于積極詞匯(active vocabulary)的積累。英語中，人們常常用同義詞或近義詞替代上文出現過的詞，以求避免用詞重復、體現文采，這種語言現象被稱作求雅變異(elegant variation)。運用近義詞不僅可以體現雅致的文風，還有利于加強段落的統一性和連貫性。那么今天，我們就來學習一些在托福寫作過程中可以排上大用場的小詞匯。

以一個簡單的句子“如果青少年經常看電視，他們就會有受到一些負面影響”為例，

學生們通常會說：If teenagers watch too much TV, they will be negatively influenced.

此處的too much可換為frequent/excessive/prolonged來表達類似的語境義。

整個句子則可修改為：Frequent exposure to TV can exert negative influence on teenagers.

再以下面這段范文為例：Would you feel happy when given an additional 10% pay raise? Would you feel excited

 when earning generous prizes in competing in a TV show? Would you feel ecstatic when 

getting 1,000 dollar by winning the lottery?

作者在談快樂時分別使用了happy/ excited/ ecstatic，通過近義詞之間的轉換避免了語言單調的問題。可見寫作替換詞的重要性。
